The Best Vegan and Vegetarian Food in Leeds
A vegetarian Bib Gourmand, a vegan tasting menu, plant-based kebabs on Call Lane and the best veggie lunches in Kirkgate Market.
By Only Leeds EditorialThe best vegan and vegetarian food in Leeds is at Bundobust on Mill Hill, which is entirely vegetarian and vegan, Prashad in Drighlington, a vegetarian restaurant with a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and Chef Jono at V&V on New Briggate for a vegan tasting menu. Add Fat Annie's and Manjit's Kitchen in Kirkgate Market, Döner Summer on Call Lane and Hyde Park Book Club in Headingley, and you could go a long time in this city without missing meat at all.
Bundobust, Mill Hill
Bundobust, at 6 Mill Hill, serves vegetarian and vegan Gujarati-style street food with craft beer. It is 100% vegetarian. Order okra fries, bhel puri, vada pav and the bhaji butty, and wash it down with its own beer. It is cheap enough to over-order and good enough that you will.
Prashad, Drighlington
Prashad, at 137 Whitehall Road in Drighlington, cooks Indian vegetarian food built on the family's Gujarati heritage, and holds a Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide. Dinner runs from Tuesday, and it opens from noon at weekends. It is a drive from the city centre, and it is worth every mile.
Chef Jono at V&V, New Briggate
Chef Jono at V&V, at 68 New Briggate, does a ten-course tasting menu that can be fully vegan, with wine pairings for each course. Past dishes have included beetroot tartare and roast courgette. It is the place for a vegan date night, or for convincing a sceptical parent.
Kirkgate Market
Fat Annie's, in the Market Kitchen, went fully plant-based in 2020 and does burgers, smoked tofu dogs, chilli cheese fries and vegan shakes. Hot dogs start at £5.95. Manjit's Kitchen, a few stalls away, is all vegetarian or vegan Punjabi food: lentil and chickpea curries, onion bhajis, roti and a thali for around £8. Both close on Sundays.
Call Lane and the city centre
- Döner Summer, 10 to 12 Call Lane. Fully vegan junk food with its own mock döner and chick'n. The Bad Girl Kebab, then a cocktail.
- Little Bao Boy, North Brewing Tap Room, Sovereign Street. Plant-based bao: crispy tofu, salt and pepper aubergine and katsu cauli. There is a Meanwood branch too.
- Eat Your Greens, 42 New York Street. Not fully vegetarian, but vegetables lead. Celeriac steak, farro risotto, charred cabbage.
- Tharavadu, 7 to 8 Mill Hill. Keralan, with a cracking vegetarian section: aubergine, chickpea, spinach and paneer curries with appams.
- Wapentake, 92 Kirkgate. A Viking Breakfast, vegan sausage sarnies and a Sunday vegan roast with vegan Yorkshire puddings.
- House of Fu, 15 to 19 The Headrow. Not vegetarian, but the tofu tonkotsu ramen and spicy tofu bowl are proper vegan options.
- Humpit, Leeds University Union. Falafel pittas, chickpea bowls and Lebanese fries, with a hummus snackpot for the walk.
- Patty Smith's, Belgrave Music Hall. Known for its vegan burgers. Order the Plant Smash.
Headingley and Hyde Park
Hyde Park Book Club, at 27 to 29 Headingley Lane, is completely vegetarian with plenty of vegan dishes: oyster mushrooms on toast, mock chicken tacos and a vegan chicken club. Anand Sweets has branches at 109 Harehills Road and 53 to 55 Queen's Road, with samosas, aloo tikki, daal makhani and an evening vegan thali. Wawin Chinese, at 40 Woodsley Road, is a fully vegan takeaway, vegan tiger prawns and all. In Headingley, Ecco Pizzeria on Otley Road will put vegan cheese on any pizza. Jino's Thai Cafe on North Lane runs a vegan set menu, with satay mushrooms and Thai red curry, and over in Burley, Doboy Donuts at Cardigan Mills has vegan options among its Biscoff and raspberry and white chocolate rings.
Horsforth
Horsforth has two all-veggie cafes worth the trip, and Rawdon, a bit further out, has a third. Scoffs on New Road Side does a breakfast burrito, a seitan kebab pitta and a chick'n Caesar sandwich. The Greenhouse on Town Street does Buddha bowls, tofu scramble, American-style pancakes and proper cake. In Rawdon, Brown's Greens Vegetarian Cafe on Harrogate Road is totally meat-free, with shakshuka, huevos rancheros and Middle Eastern flatbreads.
Vegan Sunday roast
The Brunswick on North Street does a vegan seitan roast, and Wapentake has its vegan roast with vegan Yorkshires. Book the Brunswick at weekends.
