Meanwood, Leeds: A Local's Guide

A park with a beck through it, a seven-mile trail to Golden Acre, an urban farm and a short run of very good bars: Meanwood is where Leeds goes for a Saturday.

Meanwood is the north-west Leeds suburb where the countryside starts at the end of the high street. On one side you get Meanwood Park and the Meanwood Valley Trail, on the other a short run of very good bars and restaurants on Stonegate Road and Meanwood Road, with an urban farm in between. The Observer called it "the new Chapel Allerton" in 2023, which locals took as a compliment and Chapel Allerton took as a challenge.

A bit of history

It is green now, but the valley worked for a living. From 1577 into the 19th century Meanwood Beck powered corn, flax and paper mills, dye works and tanneries. The old Cliff Tannery survives as Sugarwell Court, a Grade II listed building, and the suburb sits between Headingley, Chapel Allerton, Adel and Woodhouse.

Meanwood Park and the Hollies

Meanwood Park covers about 29 hectares, with the beck running through it, footbridges, big old trees, a playground and picnic tables. Next door, the Hollies is steeper and wilder, with rhododendrons, azaleas and the National Plant Collection of Philadelphus, which is a sentence you will not read about many parks. Three Cottages, a cafe and bakery in a converted stable at the park entrance on Green Road, opened in 2018 and does everything from dhal to bacon sandwiches, plus a Sunday roast and afternoon tea if you book ahead. The public car park is right next to it.

The Meanwood Valley Trail

The Meanwood Valley Trail runs about seven miles from Woodhouse Moor near the city centre to Golden Acre Park, waymarked with little yellow owls. The first two miles take you to Meanwood Park, the next two through Scotland Wood to the Seven Arches aqueduct, and the last three through Adel Woods to Golden Acre. Do the whole thing one way and get the X84 back down the A660, or just do the Meanwood Park stretch with a pram and a flask. It is mostly parkland and woods with a couple of road crossings, and in autumn it is about as good as a walk inside a city boundary gets.

Meanwood Valley Urban Farm

On Sugar Well Road, Meanwood Valley Urban Farm opens 10am to 4pm every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. Adults pay £3, children 50p and under 2s go free, which is the best value day out in north Leeds. You will meet sheep, cows, alpacas, goats, rabbits and guinea pigs, and the animals move around, so ask at reception where everyone is today. The Barn Coffee Shop on site is run independently.

Pubs and bars

Terminus Tap Room and Bottle Shop is the Meanwood Brewery tap, up a private road off Stonegate Road between Hungry Bear and Alfred. It opened in November 2018, takes its name from the old Meanwood tram terminus, and has 18 draught lines and fridges holding over 120 beers to drink in or take away. There is a decked beer garden, and the upstairs room hosts comedy and open mic nights. Order whatever Meanwood Brewery has on cask.

The Meanwood Tavern, at 607 Meanwood Road, used to be East of Arcadia. The team behind Whitelock's bought it, refitted it and reopened it on 1 October 2022, with Yorkshire craft beer, real ale and a pizza kitchen. It is the big, easy, family-friendly option after a walk.

Where to eat

Zucco, at 603 Meanwood Road, is the reason people from the other side of Leeds come to Meanwood. It is a family-run Italian small-plates restaurant whose original team came from Salvo's in Headingley and Polpo in London, the menu changes with the seasons, and the braised beef is the dish reviewers keep coming back to. It is often full, so book. For bread to take home, Leeds Bread Co-op is a worker co-operative baking slow-fermented sourdough on the Penraevon Trading Estate, with a shop and baking classes.

A good Meanwood day

Coffee and a pastry at Three Cottages, a loop of Meanwood Park and the Hollies, then up the trail through Scotland Wood to Seven Arches and back. Feed the goats at the urban farm if you have kids, or even if you do not. A pint at Terminus in the beer garden, dinner at Zucco, and a nightcap at the Meanwood Tavern. You will sleep well.
